Morocco’s Olympic Soccer Team Faces Must-Win Match for Round of 16 Hopes

Morocco finds itself in a delicate situation in Group B at the Paris Olympics. Tarik Sektiouti’s team has three points, tied with Iraq, Ukraine and Argentina. In such a context, all scenarios are possible. Qualification for the round of 16 is not guaranteed.
While Morocco beat Argentina 2-1, they lost to Ukraine (1-2). Iraq, on the other hand, conceded a defeat against Argentina (1-3) after a victory over Ukraine (2-1). The four teams in Group B are tied with three points and will necessarily have to win their match in the third round to continue the Olympic tournament. All scenarios are therefore possible.
Morocco could come out on top and qualify for the round of 16 in case of a victory over Iraq and a victory for Argentina against Ukraine. The Atlas Lions can also secure their ticket if they win the match against Iraq and Argentina and Ukraine draw. Such a result would allow Morocco to take the lead in the group. Similarly, Morocco will qualify in case of a draw against Iraq and a victory for Argentina over Ukraine. One last scenario would be a draw between Morocco and Iraq, and a draw between Argentina and Ukraine, bringing all teams back to a tie at 4 points.
According to the rules of the Olympic Games, in case of a tie on points, the teams will be separated by taking into account the number of goals scored by each team, the goal difference and goals in the direct confrontations. If the tie persists, the number of goals scored will be taken into account, with deduction of points according to the number of cards received by each team, knowing that a yellow card counts for one point, a red after two yellows for 3 points, a direct red for 4 points and a yellow followed by a direct red for 5 points. If the teams are still tied, a draw will be made.
