Morocco New Biometric Passport Security Features 2026

The Government Council has adopted draft decree no. 2.26.551, which amends the 2008 text that established the Moroccan biometric passport. The reform responds in particular to the evolution of counterfeiting techniques and aims to make the travel document more difficult to reproduce or fraudulently alter.

The future passport will retain its electronic chip, its personal data page and its signature page. However, it will integrate new security elements, including an additional secured photograph of the holder on the signature page.

The data recorded in the electronic component will also make it possible to strengthen controls between the information visible on the document, the identity of its holder and the elements contained in the chip. The objective is to complicate photograph substitution, modification of personal information or the use of a forged document.

The new model will also remove the personal address from the information page. It will display four languages - Arabic, Amazigh, French and English - and will adopt a design highlighting Moroccan cultural and architectural heritage.

Its rollout will be gradual in prefectures, provinces as well as in Morocco’s embassies and consulates. Current passports will remain valid until their normal expiration date and will continue to be issued temporarily during the transition period.
