Morocco’s Marrakech Tops French Summer Travel Destinations, Outpacing Domestic Getaways

The city of Marrakech in Morocco has been one of the favorite destinations for the French to spend their summer holidays.
The French preferred to spend their summer holidays outside the country rather than in the cities of France, reveals the Liligo comparator, which indicates that they were numerous to visit Marrakech, Lisbon, Porto, Barcelona, Istanbul, Djerba or even Montreal, and very few went to Nice, Ajaccio or Guadeloupe.
"There is a reaction effect after two years of deprivation. The best example is when, in November 2021, the United States announced that they were reopening their borders. We saw the demand really explode on Liligo. Confinement and Covid-19 had only a temporary effect," explains Guillaume Rostand, the spokesperson for the French travel search engine.
For these holidays, the French did not hesitate to loosen the purse strings to treat themselves. The nearly 40% increase in ticket prices between July 2019 and July 2022, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, did not prevent them from traveling outside of France during the summer season.
This increase is notably due to the surge in the price of kerosene, notes Guillaume Rostand, who estimates that aviation "at least temporarily, will become a consumer good, a bit of a luxury." Proof of this, the low-cost airline Ryanair has already announced the end of tickets for less than ten euros.
