Morocco Launches Massive Reforestation Campaign in Northeast Provinces

The General Directorate of Water and Forests and the Fight against Desertification of the Northeast (DGEFLCD) has launched the 2019-2020 forest planting campaign. This campaign covers 5,200 hectares of land in the provinces of Taza, Taounate, Al Hoceima and Guercif.

According to the DREFLCD, the implementation of this forest planting program, with a total cost of 35 million dirhams, contributes to the regularization of runoff regimes and the reduction of soil losses upstream of the Inaouene, Ouargha, Melloulou, Msoun, Nekkor, Ghiss and small Mediterranean front basins of Al Hoceima.

The objective of this campaign is to promote the conservation of biodiversity and the restoration of the natural ecosystems of cork oak, holm oak, Atlas cedar and thuya in the forest massifs of Bab Azhar, Taïnest (Taza province), Oudka (Taounate), Tamjilt (Guercif) and Boukkoya, Jbel Arz, Ikaouen (Al Hoceima), as well as reforestation, specifies MAP.

The territorial breakdown of this program is carried out at the level of 45 perimeters under the provincial jurisdiction of Taza (2,060 ha), Guercif (1,462 ha), Al Hoceima (854 ha) and Taounate (850 ha).

According to the DGEFLCD, this program joins the public efforts in the rural areas, in the mountains in particular, for the well-being of the populations but also to circumvent the environmental problems linked to climate change and which are manifested, among others, by phenomena of dieback, forest fires and disturbed regeneration dynamics, indicates the same source.
