Morocco Launches Major Restoration of Jewish Heritage Sites

On the instructions of King Mohammed VI, a vast restoration operation of synagogues, sanctuaries and Jewish cemeteries will be launched in Morocco in the coming days.
In its Monday, December 14 edition, the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot reports that the Sovereign has taken the initiative to strengthen the Jewish material heritage in Morocco, through the restoration of religious buildings and the inauguration of a large museum.
A Jewish heritage center is said to be under construction in Bzou, in the Beni Mellal region, the Israeli newspaper notes, specifying that the restoration operation concerns about 109 Jewish cemeteries.
The media adds that to prepare for the arrival of 100,000 Israeli tourists in Morocco, the king has given instructions for the construction of 10 new Jewish historical and tourist projects.
According to Serge Berdugo, the president of the Jewish community in Morocco, 100,000 Israeli tourists are expected each year in Morocco. New tour operators will be needed to organize customized tourist stays.
