Morocco’s King Extends Olive Branch to New Algerian President, Calls for ’New Chapter’ in Relations

King Mohammed VI sent a message of congratulations to the new Algerian president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, on the occasion of his inauguration as head of the Democratic Republic of Algeria.
The Sovereign expressed his warm congratulations and sincere wishes to the President for his election, and further progress and success in his mission.
"Once again I reiterate my invitation to open a new page in the relations between the two neighboring countries, based on mutual trust and constructive dialogue," added the King of Morocco.
Elected with 58.15% of the vote, the former Algerian Prime Minister faces mass demonstrations since his election as head of the republic on December 12. With only 39.83% voter turnout, the Algerian presidential election took place against a backdrop of boycott and protests.
