Morocco’s International Air Travel Rebounds, Reaching 65% of Pre-Pandemic Levels

The National Airports Office (ONDA) indicates that international commercial traffic has recorded a considerable increase during the period from June 15 to August 31, 2021. In total, more than 3.5 million passengers were welcomed through 31,202 international flights.
The international commercial traffic of Moroccan airports has thus recovered 65% of passengers and 77% of movements compared to the same period in 2019, specifies the ONDA in its assessment. In total, 1,457,154 international passengers (recovery rate of 58% compared to 2019 traffic) arrived at Casablanca-Mohammed V airport, while 565,680 passengers (46%) disembarked at Marrakech airport, details the office.
As for the recovery rates, they are 133% for Tetouan, 127% for Nador, 114% for Tangier, 106% for Al Hoceima and 105% for Oujda. Regarding traffic with Europe and North America, the recovery rates are respectively 74% and 65%, compared to 2019 traffic.
During the month of August, the international commercial traffic of Moroccan airports recovered 82% of the 2019 passenger traffic. This rate competes with that of the Mediterranean countries, in particular France (70%), Spain (68%) and Turkey (76%), notes the ONDA.
With 75 air links offered, Casablanca-Mohammed V airport ranks first in terms of connectivity, followed by Marrakech airport (58), Fez airport (34), Tangier airport (28) and Nador airport (18). Regarding aircraft movement traffic, Mohammed V airport sees an improvement of 41% in this traffic, Marrakech Menara airport (16%) and Tangier Ibn Battouta airport (10%).
According to the office, these performances are explained by the significant evolution of air traffic, following the royal high instructions that accompanied the launch of the Marhaba 2021 operation.
