Morocco fuel prices drop sharply at pump this month

Moroccan motorists could finally see a more significant drop in gas stations. Economist Mohamed Jadri predicts an additional reduction that could exceed one dirham, or even reach one and a half dirhams per liter, by the end of the month, if international prices remain at their current level, reports Hespress. This easing comes after the agreement between the United States and Iran, which helped bring the barrel back below 80 dollars.

The reductions already applied by some distribution companies remain limited for now to a few dozen cents. They appear modest compared to the increases recorded in recent months, when prices rose from around 10.80 dirhams per liter before the crisis to more than 15 dirhams in March and April. For Houssine El Yamani, secretary general of the National Oil and Gas Union, this gap is also explained by the distributors’ calculation method, based on periods of approximately fifteen days.

This lag is fueling renewed debate on fuel price liberalization in Morocco. Mohamed Jadri calls on the Competition Council to resume publishing regular reports allowing comparison between the evolution of world prices and those applied locally.
