Morocco: Foreign tourists rescued from the waters
The drama was narrowly avoided in the Sidi Ali region. Trapped in their vehicle by the sudden rise in water levels, two Spanish tourists owe their survival to a last-minute rescue operation carried out by the Royal Gendarmerie, as the storms hit the southeast of the Kingdom hard.
The two Spanish nationals are now safe, but they have been through a lot. Unharmed, they were immediately transferred to a hotel in the region to receive psychological and material support after losing everything in the floods. No injuries are to be deplored, a miracle given the violence of the accident.
Their salvation came from the responsiveness of the authorities. Alerted as the situation was becoming critical, the elements of the territorial center of the Gendarmerie of Sidi Ali, under the company of Merzouga, intervened in record time. A perilous field operation that allowed the victims to be extracted before it was too late.
A few moments earlier, the trip had turned into a nightmare. Surprised by the speed of the floods on a submerged road section, the tourists’ vehicle was literally swept away by the force of the current. The incident, caused by the recent weather disturbances affecting the province, serves as a reminder of the extreme danger of the wadis at this time of year.
