Morocco: Torrential rains kill seven in the province of Safi
The sky unleashed itself on the province of Safi this Sunday, December 14th. In just one hour, torrential rains transformed the streets into rivers, costing the lives of seven people and causing significant material damage.
It is a dramatic toll that falls at the end of the evening. The sudden floods, described as being of "exceptional magnitude" by the local authorities, trapped the inhabitants with lightning speed. Seven people died, swept away by the floodwaters or trapped after the waters infiltrated their homes and businesses. In addition, twenty survivors were rescued and urgently transferred to the Mohammed V hospital to receive the necessary care.
The violence of the weather phenomenon surprised by its brevity: everything tipped over "in just one hour". The city bears the scars of this deluge, particularly in the medina, at the level of Bir Anzran Street and Abou Dahab Square.
The initial assessments record the flooding of 70 houses and commercial premises, while about ten vehicles were carried away by the current. The road network is also fractured, particularly on the provincial road 2300 connecting Safi to Ahrara, isolating several routes.
At the moment, rescue operations are continuing in an attempt to find any missing persons and restore traffic in a stricken province.
