Morocco Environmental Ranking Falls Behind Algeria Tunisia

Morocco obtains a score of 33.11 points in the Environmental Performance Index 2026 and ranks 136th out of 177 countries. Its result improved by 2.42 points over ten years, but remains significantly below the regional average, set at 40.15 points.

The index developed by Yale University evaluates countries based on 47 indicators distributed across 12 categories. It notably takes into account air and water quality, waste management, biodiversity, ecosystem vitality and climate change mitigation.

According to Yale University’s Environmental Performance Index 2026, Algeria ranks 78th globally with 42.74 points. Its score improved by 3.82 points over ten years, more than Morocco’s.

Tunisia widens the gap

Tunisia ranks 85th with a score of 41.05 points. It especially shows progress of 5.72 points over ten years, more than twice that recorded by the Kingdom.

Morocco thus finds itself 58 places behind Algeria and 51 places behind Tunisia. The gap shows that Moroccan advances in certain areas are not yet sufficient to rapidly improve its overall environmental record.

The ranking does not measure solely the development of renewable energies or climate commitments announced by states. It also integrates results obtained in protecting health, natural resources and ecosystems. On this set of criteria, Morocco is progressing, but its neighbors are advancing faster.
