Morocco Electric Cars Outsell South Africa in Africa

The electric car is beginning to find its place in Africa. In its annual report dedicated to electric mobility, the International Energy Agency notes that the African market grew from approximately 4,000 electric car sales in 2023 to nearly 25,000 in 2025. This growth remains concentrated in just a few countries.

Morocco is part of this leading group. According to data cited by the IEA, the kingdom recorded approximately 5,500 electric car sales in 2025. It ranks behind Egypt, credited with 7,900 sales, but ahead of South Africa, where 3,800 sales were recorded. Together, these three countries accounted for nearly 70% of electric car sales across the African continent in 2025.

The report, however, invites caution in reading these figures. The African automotive market remains largely dependent on used vehicles imported from producing countries such as Germany, Japan or the United States. The IEA estimates that approximately 60% of annual additions to the African vehicle fleet correspond to imported used cars. Statistics on new vehicle sales or registrations alone therefore do not fully reflect the actual level of electric adoption across the continent.

Another trend noted by the IEA concerns the rise of Chinese manufacturers. In Africa, BYD represented only 4% of electric car sales in 2023. Two years later, its share reaches 35% of the regional market. This growth illustrates the growing weight of Chinese models, often more competitive, in emerging markets.

The report also mentions the beginnings of local manufacturers. The IEA notably cites the Moroccan Neo Motors, which began selling its first electric model at the beginning of 2026. This mention remains brief, but it confirms that Morocco appears not only as a consumption market: it is also beginning to be identified in local initiatives related to automotive electrification.

On a global scale, the context remains very favorable for the electric car. Sales exceeded 20 million units in 2025, representing one in four new cars sold worldwide. The IEA forecasts approximately 23 million sales in 2026, which would represent 28% of the global automotive market. In this landscape dominated by China, Europe and major international manufacturers, Morocco remains a modest market, but it is already among the African countries where the transition to electric is most visible.
