Morocco’s Electric Car Sales Double, But Lag Behind European Market

Moroccans are gradually adopting electric cars. Sales of this type of vehicle have seen a marked increase over the past year, but still far behind sales in Europe.
According to a recent count by the Association of Car Importers in Morocco, electric vehicle sales doubled in Morocco in 2023, reaching 463 units. A quantitative leap that shows the growing interest of Moroccans in this type of vehicle. This upward trend is first justified by the diversification of the offer, it is specified.
In addition to this increase in the number of available models, there is the constant interest of the Moroccan government in this sector, which is reflected in the implementation of incentive policies (tax exemptions) to attract investors. However, the still high cost of these vehicles and the insufficient number of charging points remain challenges to be met to encourage the large-scale adoption of electric vehicles.
According to forecasts, the upward trend in electric vehicle sales in Morocco should continue this year. Also, it is expected an extension of the public charging network as well as the arrival of new models at more competitive prices, which should increase demand.
In total, the automotive market in Morocco recorded mixed performance last year. The total sales volume reached 161,504 units, a slight increase of 0.1% compared to 2022.
