Morocco Electric Battery Gigafactory 100 GWh Expansion

The African Development Bank has approved a $110 million loan in favor of Gotion Power Morocco to finance the first phase of the project. It also plans to mobilize up to an additional $162.6 million from development partners.

Led by Chinese group Gotion High-Tech, the plant will manufacture lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells and packs, intended in particular for electric vehicles. It is presented as the first integrated installation of this type in Africa and in the Middle East-North Africa region.

From 10 to 100 GWh

The first phase should enable annual production of 10 GWh. The project then plans a ramp-up that could bring total capacity to 100 GWh, strengthening Morocco’s position in the global electric mobility supply chain.

The investment is expected to create over 600 direct jobs and achieve a local industrial integration rate of 70%. The objective is to develop around the plant a Moroccan network of suppliers, technical expertise and battery-related activities.

Already equipped with over 250 automotive companies and suppliers, including Renault and Stellantis, Morocco is thus seeking to move from vehicle assembly to the production of their most strategic components. The future gigafactory will also primarily use renewable energy.
