Chinese Battery Giant Gotion to Build $1.3 Billion Gigafactory in Morocco

Chinese battery giant Gotion High-Tech is preparing to launch the construction of the first gigafactory in Africa near Kenitra.
Gotion Power Morocco, the local subsidiary of Sino-European electric vehicle battery manufacturer Gotion High Tech, will begin construction of its gigafactory in Kenitra "in the coming days," announced Khalid Qalam, the company’s general manager in Morocco, during a press conference in Rabat on Wednesday. According to him, preparatory work has already been completed, and initial production is expected in the third quarter of 2026. The first phase is valued at 1.3 billion dollars, and the production capacity will reach 20 gigawatts of batteries.
It is planned to increase this capacity to 40 GW during the second phase, to reach a total capacity of 100 GWh over all five phases. The factory will manufacture batteries for electric vehicles, as well as cathodes and anodes. European markets are the main export destination. Automobile manufacturers have already placed orders. "We have already received orders from many European car manufacturers," Qalam said.
As a reminder, Gotion High Tech had signed an investment agreement with the Moroccan government in June 2024 to create the first gigafactory in Africa near Kenitra, in northwestern Morocco, for a total investment of 6.5 billion dollars. The entire project, spread over five phases, will create 10,000 jobs across the industrial complex.
