Morocco Secures $6.5 Billion Investment for Electric Vehicle Battery Gigafactory

The project to build a battery manufacturing plant for electric vehicles by the Chinese giant Gotion high tech in Atlantic Free Zone, the free zone of the city of Kenitra dedicated to the automotive sector, will make Morocco the leader in electric mobility in the Middle East and Africa region.
Soon a first gigafactory in Morocco. The total cost of the project amounts to 65 billion dirhams, the largest foreign industrial investment in Morocco after that of Renault in Tangier. The German automaker Volkswagen will participate in the capital of Gotion High-Tech’s future Moroccan subsidiary to the tune of 40%. Moroccan investors will contribute to the establishment of the plant through projects like CNGR. "We will integrate as much capital and know-how as possible," say sources at Médias24. The Chinese giant Gotion high tech intends to install its plant in Atlantic Free Zone, not far from the Stellantis plant, near the student areas, particularly the UM6P, in order to take advantage of the future port of Kenitra Atlantique, whose commissioning is scheduled for 2030.
The construction of this first gigafactory is imminent. The plant will have to be operational within 24 months, during the third quarter of 2026. In the first phase, an investment of 12.8 billion is planned, with a capacity of 20 GWh. A capacity of 100 GWh will be reached upon completion of the project. From Kenitra, this first gigafactory will develop cheaper batteries: lithium, iron and phosphate (LFP). "When you want to make a competitive battery for vehicles that have to be competitive, you opt for LFP batteries to lower prices," the same sources confide. In addition, this project will generate 17,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs, including 2,300 highly skilled jobs, and will also help preserve 220,000 jobs in this sector. Training will be organized for the benefit of employees. An R&D center will be developed as part of this project, which will make Morocco one of the largest gigafactories in the Middle East & Africa region.
Why did Gotion high tech choose to settle in Morocco? This choice is explained by several factors: the stability of the kingdom, the youth of the population, its infrastructure and renewable energies.
