Chinese Battery Giant to Build $1.3 Billion Factory in Morocco

The Chinese battery giant Gotion High-Tech will invest up to 1.3 billion euros in Morocco to build a lithium-ion battery factory.
Officially announced today, this "gigafactory", the first of its kind in Morocco for electric vehicles, represents an initial investment of $1.3 billion (12.8 billion dirhams).
Located near Casablanca, the plant will have an initial capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh), expandable up to 100 GWh, bringing the total investment to $6.5 billion. This project is part of Morocco’s strategy to develop renewable energy and electric vehicle production.
With Renault and Stellantis factories already present, Morocco benefits from a favorable automotive ecosystem. Its proximity to Europe and its free trade agreements (EU and United States) facilitate exports. The plant will strengthen the local production of components for electric and hybrid vehicles, with the aim of increasing the share of local components in automotive exports from 65% to 80%.
