Morocco Earns 32 Blue Flag Awards, Leads Arab World in Environmental Protection

For the 2024 summer season, 32 Moroccan sites will fly the Blue Flag label, awarded by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection under the presidency of Princess Lalla Hasnaa.

This distinction rewards 27 beaches, 4 marinas and, for the first time in Morocco, a mountain lake. With this new label, Morocco consolidates its position as the Arab leader in environmental protection and ranks 18th worldwide among the 43 countries in the Northern Hemisphere in terms of the number of Blue Flag sites.

Among the 27 labeled beaches this year, we find regulars such as Oued Laou, Essaouira, Sidi Rahal or Mdiq. These sites have been able to maintain the high standards of the Blue Flag label throughout the year.

But the big novelty of this 2024 edition is the awarding of the label to a high-altitude lake: Aguelmam Azigza, nestled in the heart of the Khénifra National Park. This still little-known natural gem, surrounded by cliffs and cedar forests, offers an idyllic setting for nature and tranquility lovers.

We also note the labeling of 4 marinas: Tanja Marina Bay, Saïdia, Est Marina Smir and Al Hoceïma.

The Blue Flag is accompanied by a strict specification and rigorous monitoring. The labeled sites must meet specific criteria in terms of bathing water quality, environmental information and awareness, hygiene, safety, development and management. Unannounced checks are carried out throughout the summer season to ensure compliance with these requirements.
