Morocco's Blue Flag Beaches Expand to 33 Sites for Summer 2025

For the 2025 summer season, 33 sites will fly the international Blue Flag label. This distinction, managed in Morocco by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, rewards beaches, marinas, and aquatic sites that meet strict environmental standards. This year’s assessment includes the addition of two new winners.

The number of labeled beaches rises to 28. This total includes Sol beach, located in the Tangier-Assilah province, which obtains the distinction for the first time. The other 27 beaches had already received the Blue Flag in 2024 and have all had their label renewed, a fact that the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection presents, in a press release, as proof of the continuity of efforts by site managers.

Regarding port infrastructures, the Tangier Marina Bay pleasure port joins the list of winners. It becomes the fourth Moroccan port to receive this recognition after those of Saïdia, Marina Smir, and Al Hoceïma. Moreover, the mountain lake of Aguelmame Azegza, in the Khénifra National Park, has also renewed its label, maintaining its status as the first natural lake in the country to be so distinguished.

The awarding of the Blue Flag is conditional on compliance with four families of criteria: bathing water quality, environmental information and awareness, hygiene and safety, as well as site development and management. To ensure compliance throughout the season, the Foundation specifies that unannounced control visits are organized during the summer.

The management of these sites is part of the national "Clean Beaches" program, which ensures coordination between multiple actors. This involves 68 local authorities, 25 economic partners, and more than a hundred local associations. The program is also supported by state entities, including the National Laboratory for Pollution Studies and Monitoring, the General Directorate of Civil Protection, and the Ministry of Health.

With 33 sites in total, Morocco ranks 21st globally, 1st among Arab countries, and 2nd in Africa in terms of Blue Flags. Interest in this certification seems to be growing, as 45 beaches applied for it in 2025, showing the appeal of the label for coastal municipalities.
