Morocco’s Daylight Saving Confusion: Smartphones Defy Official Time Change Cancellation

Despite the announcement of the end of the time change in Morocco since last October, many Moroccans did not know which clock to follow on Sunday morning when they woke up.
Virtually all Moroccans’ smartphones and tablets have taken the time change into account and have adopted this modification during the night from Saturday to Sunday, while this modification is no longer, normally, current in the kingdom.
The permanent adoption of daylight saving time adopted in October last year in haste and published in the Official Gazette in record time had pushed many Moroccans, especially the young, to protest and demonstrate in the streets. It sometimes took the firmness of the public authorities to bring the high school students back to the school benches.
And to make matters worse, deputies from the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) had prepared a bill to definitively return to legal time, i.e. GMT. To try to convince the parliamentarians, the PAM claims that the maintenance of daylight saving time would have negative repercussions on the health and morale of a majority of the population. In addition, it highlights the inconveniences caused by the change of schedules among students and students and the differences between the regions.
The return to daylight saving time or the permanent maintenance of GMT legal time must still be decided after the evaluation made by a government report.
