Morocco Debates Permanent Return to GMT as Summer Time Controversy Continues

Tuesday 12 February 2019, by Said

While the maintenance of summer time has not finished creating turmoil in Morocco, a bill has just been proposed by the PAM group with a view to the definitive return to legal time, i.e. GMT.

Backed by the support of a large part of the population, the political party could benefit from the support of parliamentarians, particularly those of the majority, reports the newspaper Al Massae. And it is on this support that the parliamentary group is counting on to make the Moroccans switch back to GMT time.

To try to convince them, the PAM claims that the maintenance of summer time would have negative repercussions on the health as well as on the morale of a majority of the population. Furthermore, it highlights the inconveniences caused by the change in schedules among students and students and the differences between the regions.

Before its final adoption, the law must first go through the legislation and justice committee at the level of the House of Representatives to be examined and approved. Then, it should land in parliament for the final vote.

Questioned by the newspaper, some PAM deputies consider that the government acted hastily, speaking of a study of several months that has demonstrated the benefits for citizens. This study, the publication of which had been promised by the government, has still not been made public today.
