Morocco’s Dam Water Levels Drop to 39.7%, Raising Drought Concerns

The reservoirs of the main national dams have reached a rate significantly lower than that recorded in 2019. According to figures published by the Ministry of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water, this filling rate is estimated at 39.7%, or more than 6.19 billion cubic meters.

In 2019 at the same date, the water reserves in the dams were 7.64 billion cubic meters, a filling rate of 49%, according to the daily situation of the dams established by the Directorate General of Water. In detail, it should be noted that the filling rate of the Al Wahda dam in the province of Ouezzane is 55.1% against 55% in 2019 with a reserve of 1.94 billion m³, reports the MAP.

Regarding the Al Massira dam located in the province of Settat, it currently offers 14.5% of its filling rate, or 386.5 million m³, against 495.1 million m³. The Bin El Ouidane dam in the province of Azilal provides 23.6% of its capacity, or 287.2 million m³, against 611.9 million m³ on September 10, 2019.

As for the Idriss 1st dam in Fez, its current volume is 712.9 million m³ against 917.7 million m³ in 2019, while that of Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah shows a filling rate of 59.8%. In the province of Beni Mellal, the Ahmed El Hansali dam is at 14.2% of its filling rate, and that of Oued El Makhazine in Larache is filled at 84.4%. Finally, the El Mansour Eddahbi dam in the province of Ouarzazate shows 92.4 million m³ against 178.2 million m³ in 2019, the same source indicates.
