Morocco Cracks Down on Personal Use of Government Vehicles

The anarchic use of service vehicles in the public administration is over. From now on, any beneficiary civil servant must use them only for professional travel and for home-to-work journeys. A register is deposited in the municipalities and local administrations to collect the number of kilometers traveled and the amount of fuel consumed.

This decision taken by the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, is part of the rationalization of state expenditure, reports Al Massae, which adds that the note published to this effect, gives instructions to the walis and governors to enforce it in their area of competence.

It is clear that the state’s vehicle fleet is experiencing a marked deterioration due to the private use of service vehicles, which remains prohibited under the texts governing the world of work. The information received by the ministry indicates an anarchic management of this fleet creating uncontrolled expenses, the circular states.

From now on, service vehicles cannot be used for personal purposes, on weekends or during vacation periods. And to ensure compliance with these instructions, the authority has set up duly mandated commissions to control the use of these vehicles, the same source specifies.

In addition, the police prefects and district chiefs, the police services have received instructions to ensure that a service vehicle must not, under any pretext, find itself in circulation outside the territorial jurisdiction of the administration or the public body to which it belongs.

The ministry has therefore decided to put an end, with all the necessary firmness, to this situation. Vehicles must only circulate during working hours and days. For any trip, the destination duly entered on the service order must be respected. Any extraordinary travel must be the subject of a special authorization.
