Morocco’s Car Rental Industry Faces Crisis as Fleet Shrinks and Debts Mount

The situation is not improving in the car rental sector in Morocco despite the battery of measures taken to boost tourism. Aging vehicles and pressure from credit companies, some are being pushed into bankruptcy.
Long paralyzed by the Covid-19 crisis, this sector is having trouble seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, according to the daily l’Économiste, which indicates that the resumption of activities this summer season will apparently do nothing about it.
According to the newspaper, the profession is about to "live a second black year", as more than 50% of the fleet has been sold and several vehicles have been recovered by credit companies for default on payments. Added to this is the aging of the car fleet of some rental companies who were hoping to renew it before the summer season.
The daily cites the example of Hertz, which was forced to sell 75% of its fleet, or 2,000 cars. In this context, it will be difficult to meet the occasional but pressing demand from Moroccans living abroad.
The newspaper estimates that the two months of the summer season would not be enough to make up for the losses accumulated since 2020.
