Morocco Cracks Down on Influencers: Tax Authorities Target Social Media Stars

The Directorate General of Taxes is summoning the owners of channels (YouTubers and influencers, Instagrammers, TikTokers and others) to declare the income generated by their activity.
In accordance with Article 220 of the General Tax Code on the "Normal Procedure for Rectifying Assessments", the services of the Directorate General of Taxes have recently sent notifications to the famous owners of channels on social networks so that they file their declarations on income tax and value added tax, reports the Arabic-language daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. Teams would also be at work to estimate the income and declarations made by certain influencers.
For more than two years, the Directorate General of Taxes (DGI) has been active in the tax control of e-commerce, in order to integrate this parallel economy into the official circuit. This will strengthen and optimize the budgetary resources of the State. Now the DGI has access to data such as bank statements, etc. and obtains all the necessary evidence concerning the gap between the gains actually realized and those officially declared by the influencers.
