Morocco Cracks Down on Illegal Motorcycle Taxi Services in Major Cities

A new mode of transportation is emerging in Tangier and other Moroccan cities. However, it is considered illegal by the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit.
While the tension between taxi drivers and users of transportation apps is intensifying, a new mode of transportation is making its appearance. In Tangier, transportation companies have started using motorcycles to transport passengers. They require drivers to have motorcycles in good condition and equipped with legal documents such as the registration certificate and driver’s license, so that they can offer their services through the apps after registering their personal data. They also give them guidance, particularly to avoid certain places like taxi stands, train stations and in front of hotels, in order to avoid problems with taxi professionals and escape security investigations.
The entry of motorcycles into the transportation sector is not to the liking of taxi professionals. They call for the need to organize and regulate these practices due to the significant enthusiasm they generate.
Responding to a question in Parliament, Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit stated that the use of private vehicles for transportation via smart apps is illegal and requires prior authorization, and is subject to the penalties provided by law. The same applies to the use of motorcycles for urban transportation.
