Morocco Coach Regragui Contemplated Resignation After Early AFCON Exit

After the elimination of the Moroccan team in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in Côte d’Ivoire, the coach Walid Regragui would have seriously considered resigning.
Regragui and the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), Fouzi Lekjaa, would have had several meetings to discuss the reasons for this early exit from the competition, according to a source quoted by the site Hesport.
Initially, it seemed that no agreement had been reached between the federation and Regragui to continue their collaboration. However, after intense discussions, it was decided to keep Regragui at the head of the team, with the objective of building a competitive selection for the 2026 World Cup qualifications and to win the next CAN, which will take place in Morocco in 2025.
Regragui had previously expressed that his decision to stay or not would depend on the team’s result at the CAN in Côte d’Ivoire, indicating that a failure to reach at least the semi-finals could push him to resign. However, these remarks were nuanced during a press conference following the defeat against South Africa, announcing that a meeting with Lekjaa would determine his future.
The FRMF has finally confirmed its support for Regragui’s vision for the national team, giving him free rein to form his technical staff and plan the coming months. There could be some changes.
