Morocco’s Coach Regragui Considers Staff Shakeup After AFCON Disappointment

After the disappointing participation of the Atlas Lions in the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which will end on Sunday in Côte d’Ivoire, the technical staff of the Moroccan national team could undergo a change.
Towards a change in Walid Regragui’s staff? The coach of the Moroccan national team intends to replace his assistant Rachid Benmahmoud, reveals Al Ayam 24, adding that the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) will make an announcement to this effect in the very near future. At the origin of this decision, a disagreement between Walid Regragui and Rachid Benmahmoud on the "human and technical choices" following the match of the Moroccan team against South Africa. This match resulted in a victory for the Banafa Banafa over the Atlas Lions and the end of the adventure of Regragui’s men.
Despite this failure, Walid Regragui remains in his position as coach of the Moroccan national team. "The Royal Moroccan Football Federation renews its confidence in Mr. Walid Regragui to lead the next stage, providing him with all the means of support and accompaniment in order to reach the status that Moroccan football deserves," said the governing body of Moroccan football in a statement. The president of the federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, stressed the need "to continue the work and invest fully, in order to give the Moroccan national team and national football the deserved place and make the hearts of Moroccan supporters vibrate with joy during the next competitions."
Morocco will host the 35th edition of the AFCON in 2025 and co-host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal.
