Morocco Coach Regragui Backs Struggling Ziyech for 2025 Africa Cup Qualifiers

Despite all the criticism against him, Hakim Ziyech is still in Walid Regragui’s plans. The Moroccan coach is counting on the 31-year-old striker, who is struggling at Galatasaray, to make the difference in the upcoming matches against Gabon and Lesotho, counting for the first round of the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in Morocco.
Ziyech will be the focus of all attention this Friday, during the match against Gabon which will take place at the Grand Stadium of Agadir. In poor form, the striker is making his return to the national team in a context of changes and will have to prove that he deserves his place in the squad of the Atlas Lions, which is full of offensive talents like Brahim Diaz and Ilias Akhomach.
The 31-year-old player is going through a bad patch at Galatasaray where he failed to establish himself last season. Despite his undeniable technical abilities and his experience of European competitions, Ziyech has not met the expectations of the Turkish club, which is considering parting ways with him. Now unwanted, the Atlas Lion is looking for a new club to relaunch his career. Looks are turned towards the very weak Qatari championship.
The left-footed magical striker has been the target of criticism since his call-up by Regragui for the matches against Gabon and Lesotho due to this worrying drop in performance. Many Moroccan supporters are asking coach Regragui to bet on the young talents who shone during the Paris Olympics, rather than continuing to trust Ziyech.
The matches against Gabon and Lesotho, scheduled for September 6 and 10 at the Grand Stadium of Agadir, therefore represent a golden opportunity for Zyech to regain Regragui’s and the Moroccan public’s confidence. It’s up to him to prove that he deserves his place in the national team.
