Morocco Cautiously Welcomes US Middle East Peace Plan, Emphasizes Jerusalem Status

Morocco says it "appreciates" the efforts made by US President Donald Trump to achieve an effective settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Nevertheless, the kingdom advocates the preservation of the status of Jerusalem.

Last Tuesday, at the end of his talks with the Portuguese President, Augusto Santo Silva, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, indicated, during a press briefing, that the "resolution of the Palestinian crisis is the key to achieving stability in the Middle East".

It is in this sense that the Kingdom appreciates the constructive peace efforts deployed by the current US administration, through a peace plan, in order to achieve a just, lasting and equitable solution to this conflict. But according to the minister, Morocco reserves the right to examine the details of the plan for a return to peace.

Be that as it may, according to the explanations of Nasser Bourita, the "peace plan" seems to go in the same direction as the principles of peace that Morocco has always defended. "The acceptance by the parties of the various elements is indeed fundamental for the implementation and sustainability of this plan," declares the minister, stressing that if the economic dimension is important, it must be complemented by a political dimension.

Regarding Jerusalem, Bourita supported that Morocco, whose king chairs the Al-Quds Committee, reiterates the position contained in the "Al-Quds Appeal" of March 30, 2019, signed by the King, Amir Al Mouminine, and Pope Francis, which proposes that "the access of the faithful to the three monotheistic religions be respected and that the right to worship for each believer be an inalienable right". For the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the kingdom considers that the status of Jerusalem must be preserved, and the final decision must be the subject of discussions between the parties, in accordance with international legality.

Morocco expresses the wish that a constructive dynamic of peace be launched, with a view to a realistic, applicable, equitable and sustainable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian issue.
