Morocco to Build Africa's Largest Seawater Desalination Plant in Casablanca

The process is underway for the realization of a large continental seawater desalination plant in Casablanca. This is the announcement made by the Minister of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water, Abdelkader Amara, on Tuesday in Rabat.

10 MMDH, this is the budget for this project whose treatment capacity is close to 300 million m³ of water, said Mr. Amara, responding to a main question from the majority and opposition groups in the House of Councillors, on the "measures taken to remedy the water shortage".

The seawater desalination project in the province of Chtouka Ait Baha has already been completed, in addition to the improvement of several desalination plants in the southern provinces of the Kingdom. Despite the health crisis, 14 other dams are under construction in various regions of the Kingdom and five others will be built next year, in addition to the six others already completed, adds the same source.

The work to connect the Tangier water system to the Khrofa dam, that of Agadir to the Aoulouz and Moukhtar Soussi dams, and that of Targuist to Al Hoceima, has been completed. In addition, the hydraulic connection between the north and south of Casablanca has also been put in place.

The 2019-2020 season recorded a worrying rainfall deficit, resulting in a precipitation rate ranging from -67% to -5% depending on the region. "As for water imports, the total volume reached 4.3 billion m3, a deficit of 64%," the minister stressed, stating that to overcome this problem, the government is counting on the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program for the period 2020-2027, for a budget of 115.4 MMDH, and on the 2020-2050 Strategic Water Plan (PNE), for an amount of more than 380 MMDH.
