Morocco beaches privatized: authorities reverse decision after outcry
Facing general outrage, authorities commit to reopening paths leading to the famous Cabo Negro beach, in northern Morocco. The sudden installation of gates blocking passage had sparked a fierce controversy over the appropriation of the coastline.
Located in the M’diq-Fnideq province, this summer destination found itself at the heart of an unexpected controversy. Without any prior warning, restriction signs and locked metal gates were erected on several pedestrian accesses leading to the shore. An unpleasant surprise for swimmers, as well as for the many residents of Ceuta accustomed to spending their weekends there on the other side of the border.

The backlash quickly organized on social media. With photos as evidence, multiple users denounced this circulation ban in the middle of high season. While some saw it as a security or organizational measure related to private property management, the vast majority of vacationers firmly condemned an illegal obstruction of their fundamental right to access the maritime public domain.
This privatization affair illustrates an increasingly frequent phenomenon of land grabbing in Morocco. In several coastal towns, gated residential complexes are multiplying and no longer hesitate to post signs at their entrances, stipulating that beach access is now strictly exclusive to their residents only.
