Morocco and US Finalize Plans for Massive ’African Lion 2023’ Military Exercises

The Moroccan-American military maneuvers called "African Lion", the largest on the African continent, will take place this year from May 22 to June 16 in the south of the kingdom. The two countries are preparing for the proper conduct of these exercises, which will involve 6,000 soldiers from 20 countries.
Representatives of the Moroccan and American armies held a meeting on the last preparations for these exercises, which are in their 19th edition this year, between March 12 and 16 at the command headquarters of the southern zone in Agadir, indicates the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) in a press release published on Monday.
This year, African Lion will be filled with land, air and naval exercises, and on the decontamination of CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) risks. In total, 27 observers will attend these maneuvers, which will take place in different regions of the south of the kingdom in Agadir, Tan Tan, Mehbes, Taroudant, Ben Guerir and in the center in Kenitra.
"African Lion is an essential event that contributes to consolidating Moroccan-American military cooperation and strengthening exchanges between the armed forces of the different countries to promote security and stability in the region," the note specifies. For several years, the United States has been a privileged partner of Morocco, from whom it buys military equipment to strengthen its army.
