Morocco Allocates $80 Million for Mandatory Military Service Program in 2020

770 million dirhams will be spent in 2020 for military service, according to the Minister of Defense, who took the opportunity to lift the veil on the expenses related to this reform launched last year.

According to the allocations made from the 770 million dirhams, 421 million dirhams will be reserved for the salaries and allowances of the 15,000 conscripts in 2019 as well as those who will be retained for the year 2020. The construction and rehabilitation of reception and training centers will cost 288 million dirhams. As for the operating expenses of the military service, they will cost 61 million dirhams in 2020 against 330 million dirhams in 2019.

According to Medias24, military service is widely supported by Moroccans. 133,820 of them, including 89,213 volunteers, filled out the registration form in 2019. Among them, there were 13,614 women. For 2020, 15,000 people, including 1,100 women, have been selected.

The training of conscripts begins with a basic common training of 4 months. It consists of general training and military training. And, at the end of this training, the conscripts are then assigned to different units of the Royal Armed Forces for one month of technical military training in different fields. This will be followed by an apprenticeship in trades such as computing, technology, topography, car mechanics, electricity, medical emergencies and driving. This lasts 7 months.

At the end of this 12-month training, a certificate will be awarded to the conscripts, according to the type of training they have followed and which could serve as a starting point for their integration into the world of work.
