Morocco Ramps Up 5G Infrastructure for 2030 FIFA World Cup Preparations

The Ministry of Digital Transition and Public Administration Reform will be responsible for managing telecommunications during the 2030 World Cup. This is what the Moroccan Organizing Committee for the tournament has decided.

Under the supervision of the ministry, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency and the Digital Development Agency (ADD) will work in synergistic action to achieve this goal. As a priority, they will work to ensure that ICT infrastructures comply with FIFA standards, reports Maroc Diplomatique.

Minister Ghita Mezzour had held, at the end of March, a working session with the sector’s players to assess the level of execution of the ongoing ICT infrastructure projects in the perspective of the 2030 World Cup. The objective is to mobilize all stakeholders in order to accelerate the implementation of these projects in compliance with FIFA requirements.

For a successful organization of the 2030 World Cup, Morocco must meet the challenge of the quality of its telecommunications and Internet network. The kingdom must quickly reach 5G and develop new technologies such as artificial intelligence and drones.

The competent authorities should prioritize the timely purchase of submarine cables to establish a direct internet connection with the United States, which generates more than 80% of global internet traffic. Three to four years can elapse between the order and the delivery of these cables, which will allow Morocco to have a fluid, fast and secure connection in order to meet the high demand expected during the 2030 World Cup.
