Spain's World Cup 2030 Bid in Jeopardy as Soccer Federation President Indicted

Pedro Rocha, the interim president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), was indicted on Friday in a case of alleged misappropriation of funds. A new case, after that of the forced kiss of his predecessor Luis Rubiales, which risks compromising Spain’s candidacy for the 2030 World Cup and that of the other countries as well, including Morocco.

The indictment of Pedro Rocha could have unfortunate consequences for Spain. The situation is worrying many Spanish football actors who fear in particular the withdrawal of their country from the organization of the 2030 World Cup, alongside Morocco and Portugal.

"It smells very bad... I’m afraid they’ll take the 2030 World Cup organization away from us... We’ll see," wrote former Spanish international Iker Casillas in a post on X. The former Real Madrid goalkeeper expressed his fears on Friday, following the announcement of the indictment of Luis Rubiales’ successor, reports 20minutos.

Last week, Luis Rubiales, ousted after the affair of the forced kiss given to player Jenni Hermoso after Spain’s triumph at the women’s World Cup, was indicted in the same case related to contracts signed by the RFEF over the past five years. His home, as well as the headquarters of the Federation, were searched.

FIFA has retained the candidacy of Morocco, Spain and Portugal for the 2030 World Cup. Morocco and Spain have expressed their interest in hosting the final of the competition. With this new case that is splashing the Spanish federation, the final of the 2030 World Cup could be played at the Grand Stadium of Casablanca, under construction in Benslimane.
