Internet and 5G: Morocco wants to catch up

The Delegate Minister to the Head of Government in charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, Ghita Mezzour, recently held a working meeting with the Organizing Committee for Morocco’s 2030 World Cup. The objective was to assess the level of implementation of ongoing infrastructure projects, particularly in the field of telecommunications and ICT.

This session was "devoted to examining the progress made in the specific preparations for the 2030 World Cup to be held in Morocco, Spain and Portugal, with regard to telecommunications infrastructure and information technology, in accordance with the royal vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and in line with the requirements of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), in order to ensure the success of this important global football event and to strengthen the position of our country in the global digital transformation," said Ghita Mezzour.

Morocco wants to improve the quality of its telecommunications and Internet network, learning from the organization of the Club World Cup where the services provided in this area did not meet the expectations of supporters and broadcasters. The weakness of the Internet and telecommunications network had been noted in the major cities as well as their total absence in other regions of the kingdom. Yet, the quality of the telecommunications and Internet network is one of the main conditions required by FIFA to validate the joint bid of Morocco, Spain and Portugal for the organization of the 2030 World Cup.

Telecommunications companies, and mainly Maroc Telecom, must quickly undertake work to improve the networks and ensure their continuous performance in order to satisfy the many foreign tourists who will visit the kingdom during the 2030 World Cup.
