Moroccan Youth Rally for Climate Action in Casablanca and Rabat

In Casablanca and Rabat, hundreds of Moroccans gathered on Friday to call on the world’s political leaders to act in the face of the climate emergency.

The situation is serious. And the warning lights are red for the climate. Aware of the danger threatening the population, they decided to make themselves heard: "We need solutions", "Our planet is in danger", "Let’s save it for our children", chanted hundreds of people, mostly young, gathered on the Corniche, a seaside boulevard in Morocco’s economic metropolis, under a dazzling sun.

The same message was heard in Rabat, where several hundred people also gathered in front of the Parliament, in the city center of the capital, taking part in the "Climate Strike" organized worldwide. On their placards, one could read: "100% renewable energy, it’s possible", "Our planet, our rights".

For Hamza Oudghiri, 40, a member of a local environmental association, it is important to unite to urge governments around the world to act in the face of global warming, reports TV5 Monde.

The same source reports that environmental protection has been made a priority by the Moroccan state, which readily adopts a prolific communication on this theme since it hosted COP22 in 2017.

It is clear that the Kingdom is particularly sensitive to the consequences of climate change. According to a report on climate risks, published in 2016 by the Royal Institute for Strategic Studies (IRES), "floods are now the main risk in terms of people killed at the national level".
