Moroccan Youth Activist Joins Greta Thunberg in UN Climate Call to Action

Tuesday 24 September 2019, by Bladi.net

Last weekend, at the United Nations headquarters, the young Moroccan environmental activist, El Mehdi Zaïri, raised his voice to denounce the climate crisis and propose actions to be taken to minimize its consequences, in support of calls for climate action. This advocacy took place against the backdrop of an immersive light show, in the run-up to the two climate summits organized by the UN on this crucial issue.

As part of this call for climate preservation, six young environmental activists including the famous Swede, Greta Thunberg, and El Mehdi Zaïri, commented in the official languages of the United Nations on the subject concerning the climate.

According to MAP, the young Mehdi, in his presentation, pointed out that climate change remains the main challenge of this century which "affects the economic and social foundations of our society". According to him, it should concern everyone all the time, not just during climate conferences or UN summits.

Further on, he pleads for no one to forget the magnitude of the challenge facing our generation because of the inaction of previous generations and the incoherence of government public policies.

Referring to the importance of youth participation in this type of event, the Moroccan voice made a plea for international conferences on the climate issue to no longer be a "closed circle" of experts and government negotiators. "This type of event needs to be inclusive of young people as well," he insisted.

His strong message could not have come at a better time on the eve of the holding in New York of the "Climate Action Summit" which brought together on September 23 a plethora of world leaders.

The objective is to increase mobilization in the face of the climate emergency. The young presenter, however, took the opportunity to reveal the latest technology in his country in terms of renewable energy.

"Over the past decade, Morocco has developed a renewable energy infrastructure across the country and we now have the largest solar park in the world," the young speaker said.

El Mehdi Zaïri, who currently works for the Green Climate Fund (GCF) based in South Korea, however, added that this initiative in his country shows sufficiently that "political will can bring about change".

According to the young activist for whom militancy and commitment to the climate and the environment remain a priority, it is an honor for him to be part of the group of environmental activists representing Morocco at the Youth Climate Summit held on Saturday in New York at the initiative of the UN Secretary-General, adds the same source.
