Moroccan Woman Breaks Barriers as Taxi Driver in Conservative Society

Lekbira El Lhimer, a 46-year-old Moroccan, is a taxi driver in Kenitra. A man’s job that she has chosen, despite the prejudices in a deeply conservative Moroccan society still very attached to traditions.
Doing this job reserved for men was a challenge for Lekbira who has been able to turn her obstacles into "opportunities" to achieve empowerment. "I’m not afraid of any work, and I don’t believe there is any work that women can’t do," she told the American site AP News.
"This job has strengthened my personality. Since I started doing this job, I have encountered a number of difficulties. I often argued with clients and in taxi stations, there are no toilets, which is particularly difficult for a woman," explains Lekbira.
The forty-year-old emphasizes the importance and role of public transportation in promoting tourism. "As professional drivers, we must leave a good impression on all tourists," both foreigners and locals, she commented.
Lekbira ensures that she fulfills her duties as a mother and wife, despite her work. "When the time is well organized, the challenges are not as insurmountable. Sacrifices and efforts are necessary to maintain this balance," she concluded.
