Moroccan trucks blocked in Algeciras

The port of Algeciras began a gradual reopening of its links with Morocco on Thursday after the ravages of Storm Kristin. This massive blockage has paralyzed nearly 2,800 trucks, clogging the infrastructure of the Strait of Gibraltar.

The port complex of Algeciras began to restore its operations as of 6:00 am on Thursday, putting an end to a near-total paralysis caused by extreme maritime conditions. While the links to Tanger Med and Ceuta were restored in the early morning, the port authorities specify that each maneuver remains subject to the assessment of the pilots and the evolution of still unstable weather.

The logistical impact of the storm - named Kristin and not Krispin by the meteorological services - is considerable. On Wednesday, about 2,800 trucks were trapped within the port, saturating the parking areas. On Thursday, the overflow shifted towards the roads of the neighboring industrial areas of Los Barrios and San Roque, where hundreds of truck drivers spent the night in their cabs, according to Europa Sur.

In Tarifa, the situation remains more critical with the continued cancellation of crossings to Tangier until further notice. Passengers with tickets have been forced to reschedule their trips or fall back on Algeciras. Maritime companies, such as Africa Morocco Link (AML) and FRS Iberia, prioritize safety in the face of a sea that has recorded waves of more than four meters.

The Strait has been experiencing gusts of wind exceeding 110 km/h since Monday, making navigation perilous.
