This year’s first large-scale movement of Saharan dust is the result of a very specific atmospheric pattern. For the sand to reach these latitudes, two conditions must come together: sustained surface winds in the Maghreb to lift the grains, and a powerful southerly current at altitude to carry them over long distances. The arrival of this Moroccan air will trigger a spectacular surge in temperatures, with readings more typical of late April.
