Saharan Dust Cloud Set to Blanket Southeast France This Week

A Saharan sand cloud is expected to reach France again. The southeast quarter of the country will be the most affected.

After the south of France at the beginning of June, the Saharan dust will again invade France. According to Météo France, a wind flow between Algeria and Morocco should lead to the formation of large clouds of dust from the desert. "We will then have to expect the arrival of these dusts in our sky as early as Tuesday evening with a peak on Thursday," says the institute. Keraunos, the French Observatory of Storms and Tornadoes, forecasts the highest concentrations of sand "Wednesday and Thursday on the southeast quarter" of the country.

At the origin of the return of the Saharan sand, a depression off the coast of Portugal and "a jet (strong wind current in latitude) that then stretches between Algeria/Morocco and the southeast of the country...", explains Météo France. The weather forecasting agency will add: "This situation is synonymous with convective phenomena over Algeria and Morocco, allowing the formation of dust clouds". The rises of dust from the Sahara "will be evacuated towards the east this weekend," says Guillaume Séchet, a meteorologist.

Due to the consequences that these sand clouds could have on the health of the most vulnerable (fine particles in the air), the prefecture of Ile-et–Vilaine had recommended maintaining the usual ventilation and airing practices.
