Moroccan Sahara Sand Reaches Europe: Blood Rain and Air Quality Alert

An isolated upper-level depression is currently carrying large quantities of sand from Morocco and Mauritania toward southern Europe. Spain’s weather agency Aemet has warned that these microscopic particles will cloud the sky and worsen air quality, particularly in southern and eastern Spain.

In the Canary Islands, conditions are considered concerning, with wind gusts exceeding 80 km/h and five-meter waves. This “weather cocktail” has already disrupted carnival festivities in Tenerife, prompting authorities to close certain beaches and advise against water sports for safety reasons.
