Saharan Sand Cloud Sweeps Across Lyon, Raising Air Quality Concerns

Saturday 12 April 2025, by Sylvanus

Since Friday, Saharan sand has returned to Lyon, with a risk of deteriorating air quality.

"It’s the west and southwest of the country that should be mainly affected," warns Guillaume Séchet from Météo Villes. He explains: "The wind is turning to the south, at high and low altitudes, and this propels sand all the way to France and beyond. As the weather is unsettled over Morocco, sandstorms are reaching us. It’s not a major episode, but it can be visible because there will be a rather thick cloud veil."

The peak is expected this Saturday, with possible deposits. "For Lyon, there could be a few drops, and sometimes these are enough. It will be more likely tomorrow Saturday late morning, during the passage of showers," specifies Guillaume Séchet.

Motorists and other users who leave their vehicles parked without shelter are advised to be vigilant: this Saharan sand episode could color the bodywork, reports Actu.fr.

In addition to the Moroccan Saharan sand, storm Olivier will hit the capital of the Gauls this Saturday with gusts up to 60 km/h and showers from midday, but still 21°C, according to Météo-France. The same phenomenon will be observed on Sunday, with thundery showers also in the Rhône. However, the risk of dust on cars will be greatly reduced.
