Moroccan Politician Faces Backlash for Coronavirus Conspiracy Claims

The statements of Nabila Mounib, a figure of the Democratic Left Federation, earned her the mockery of Internet users. According to her detractors, she shows a lack of realism in claiming that the coronavirus is a "conspiracy" well orchestrated by the great powers of this world.

Invited by students in the Master of Journalism program at the Casablanca Journalism Training Institute (IFJ), Nabila Mounib briefly spoke about the Coronavirus that is causing panic and terror in the world. Like many observers, she believes that this epidemic remains a manipulation for specific purposes. The content of her speech sparked a flood of reactions and comments on the web.

"The Coronavirus was created in China, under Moroccan order, in order to push Nabila Mounib to speak out and thus prevent the rebirth of the left," ironized an Internet user on Twitter. "It’s scandalous, no one dared to say that, not even those Mounib calls obscurantists. She is a university professor and should know that there is a scientific consensus, and that the conspiracy theory around the coronavirus has no basis, not the slightest proof, zero facts," wrote another on the same platform.

Contacted by Hespress to give her point of view on the controversy, the politician said that her remarks were poorly reported and misinterpreted "by a generally not at all informed public, who did not read and did not listen to the conference." Mounib stated that even though the interview conducted by the journalism students was impeccable, "the report was a disaster and is at the root of the current controversy." She stated that she never used the word "conspiracy," noting nonetheless that there is "possibility on many things that happen at specific times, to ask the question of why and how."

She believes that today, "there are scientists who have proven that this mutation could not be normal, and that it may be an internal manipulation of the stock market. And that there are bacteriological wars and viral wars." "And I’ve just asked the question," she says.

Regarding the question of conspiracy regarding the Coronavirus, the SG of the FGD pointed out that "it could well be a conspiracy" since "we live in a world of conspiracies that we see being executed every day for geostrategic interests or to gain control over resources."

She stresses that she is not inventing anything, since there are "publications that talk about conspiracy regarding Covid-19. And if I am accused of not having the proof, let them bring the proof of the contrary," she emphasized to her detractors.
