Moroccan Police Seize 5 Tons of Cannabis Hidden in Watermelon Shipments

The elements of the prefectural judicial police service of Agadir, on the basis of precise information provided by the services of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), thwarted on Sunday, July 19, 2020, two trafficking operations of nearly 5 tons of chira (cannabis resin).

This important seizure was carried out in two stages on board two freight transport vehicles (pickup trucks), in the Agadir region. Initially, the elements of the prefectural judicial police service of Agadir intercepted at the entrance of the city of Ait Melloul, a first vehicle on board of which were 2.343 tons of chira, packaged underneath a quantity of watermelons, indicates a press release from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), specifying that the prohibited product was seized and the 52-year-old driver of the vehicle was arrested.

Meanwhile, another vehicle was intercepted in the "Klia" region, 30 km from the city of Ait Melloul, by the elements of the judicial police who this time seized an additional 1.742 tons of chira, reports the same source.

In addition to these two seizures which amount to 4.85 tons, the elements of the prefectural judicial police service of Agadir also seized sums of money and mobile phones used by the traffickers.

Once the suspect was taken into custody for questioning under the supervision of the competent prosecutor’s office, the elements of the judicial police are trying to identify any ramifications and possible accomplices of this drug trafficking, adds the same press release.
