Moroccan Police Clash with Crowds Defying COVID Restrictions During Ashura Celebrations

During the Ashura festivities on Saturday, many Moroccans violated the health measures enacted to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the kingdom. Yet the authorities had banned any gathering the day before.
Electronic sites like Hespress have published videos of these Ashura festivities in certain neighborhoods in Casablanca and Rabat. In these videos, we witness a distressing spectacle in these times of Covid-19 where the virus continues to ravage Morocco.
We see several public gatherings, bonfires (Chouala) in the middle of the public highway, crowds of adults and children, citizens using firecrackers, acts of vandalism, clashes between protesters and law enforcement, etc. These citizens have deliberately trampled on the health measures enacted after the state of health emergency came into force.
