Moroccan Passport 10 Years: MRE Demands Extended Validity

Strengthening the security of the Moroccan passport is not enough to meet all expectations. While a new generation of biometric documents should better protect data and combat counterfeiting, Moroccans are also demanding a longer validity period.

The passport issued to adults currently remains valid for five years. For MREs, this deadline requires regular renewals at consulates, with appointments, travel, fees and delays that these procedures can entail.

The request also concerns students, business leaders and people who travel frequently. Supporters of this reform want Morocco to adopt a ten-year validity, as several countries already do for passports of adults.

Fewer consulate appointments and therefore less stress

Extending the validity period would reduce the number of applications processed by administrative services in Morocco and by consulates abroad. It would also allow citizens to keep the same document longer and limit the cost of its renewal.

Travelers are also calling for improved external coverage of the passport. Some claim it deteriorates quickly due to handling, humidity and repeated passages through airports, even when the interior pages and electronic chip remain intact.
