Moroccan Man Sentenced to Death for Brutal Patricide Over Money Dispute

The Al Hoceima Court of Appeal has sentenced a man to death for the murder of his father. The accused had been sentenced to life imprisonment in the first instance.
This case, considered one of the most atrocious family crimes, has caused shock in the commune of Abdelghaya Souahel and the region. During the investigation, the accused admitted to losing control after his father refused to give him money, an anger that led him to attack the latter with a knife, wounding him in the head. Seeing his father bleeding, he decided to end his suffering by finishing him off with a small gas cylinder. The events took place at the family home on the evening of December 31st last year.
The court of first instance had sentenced the accused to life imprisonment, considering that the evidence and testimonies were sufficient to establish his guilt. At the time, the court rejected the defense’s request to submit the accused to a psychological evaluation. The Court of Appeal decided to increase this sentence, taking into account the premeditation of the accused’s act, the violence with which the crime was committed, as well as the use of drugs and the attempt to conceal evidence. In light of these elements, the Court of Appeal sentenced the accused to death.
